(CBS Local Sports) – Athletes Unlimited is a brand new professional softball league with 56 of the best softball players in the world. CBS Sports Network will be broadcasting games this summer and fall, starting at two on Mondays at 4 p.m. EST and 8 p.m. EST.
The league is changing the softball game by creating an alternate fantasy-style scoring system where athletes can accumulate points for leadership at the end of each inning, individual stats and wins. There are plenty of big names in Athletes Unlimited like U.S. Olympic Champion Cat Osterman, former Oklahoma state star Samantha Show, and 2018 NCAA champion Jessie Warren. Warren was one of the captains for this week's game and she is very excited to be part of this new league.
"It's been amazing since I've been here from day one. The hospitality and everything they have here for us has been spectacular," Warren said in an interview with DJ Sixsmith of CBS Local. "I've had the time of my life, especially with 55 other strong athletes. Just being around them, they were just a light to my life. So far it's been a great experience. It's really fun and it's really different and I think that's a good thing. Even if you get stuck, you will be in every inning of the game as you can win points in every inning. "
In two games, Warren has 330 points and is fifth overall. The captain collected these points thanks to two victories over the weekend for Team Warren and an enormous performance on the plate in both games. Team Warren won the first game in league history thanks to a dominant performance from Osterman. Warren has always wanted to play one of the best pitchers in softball history.
"I've always wanted to play behind her. It was a great experience just with her experience in the circle," said Warren. "She's an amazing thrower and has such good control over her turns and pitches. With her leadership role, she has also helped me a lot on the coaching side with her experience. "
Some of the other interesting issues with Athletes Unlimited are that there are no coaches or directors for the five week season and teams change every week. The players have the option of putting together their own teams. At Monday's games Show is at the top of the list with 494 points, Jazymn Jackson, a member of the US national team, is second with 370 points and Aleshia Ocasio and Victoria Hayward are third and fourth, just ahead of Warren. Former Florida Seminole Warren is grateful for the opportunity to show a national audience on the CBS Sports Network what her new league is all about.
"We have had great feedback from everyone around the world. It was just great to be featured there and to be on TV again," said Warren. "I am grateful to CBS Sports for showing our talent and us there so people can see the softball being played live again. "I'm really excited about the future of this game and all that comes with it."
Watch Team Fagan vs Team Pendley at 4 p.m. EST, and then see Team Wagner vs Team Warren at 8 p.m. EST on the CBS Sports Network.
